You mention:
"Liberal use of check raise when the flop is great."

Bear in mind the check-raise is a weak play unless you have hit the flop so hard that you will get no action what so ever unless:

a) You allow your opponents to catch up
(without Jeopardising your hand ofcourse)
b) You give aggressive opponents the opportunity
to try and steal the pot.

The main point to bear in mind is that if you are against aggressive opponents it's often a good idea to lead into them, particularly if one of them has raised before the flop, because there is always a good chance he/she will play back at you (provided you haven't put across too tight an image throughout your session). Particularly with a hand like A-A or K-K when the board brings rags (ex 8c 4d 2h) because a bet here for the most part actually represents weakness more so than strength.

Furthermore when planning to use a check raise you have to be absolutely certain that one of your opponents will bet otherwise you have wasted a betting round and lost a bet. If you lead into your opponent you will either get 1 bet or 3 bets (if he plays back at you) with a check raise you will get 2 bets or 0 bets (if he checks behind you). Just a thought, happy gaming, Sam.

Matt

I totally agree with your philosophy on AA and KK because so may players are content to call even when they feel like they are behind in the hand but expect you to slowplay a monster like AA because they themselves would fear scaring everyone out of the pot with a nice sized raise and not get paid off. However here is the truth if no one was going to call before the flop then you are probably not going to get action on the flop anyway unless someone flops two pairs or something like that in which case you are in trouble anyway. Furthermore once you get someone to call a raise preflop anyway they become more committed to their hand and might be willing to call another raise into a rag board like 2h 3c 8s with next to nothing because they put you on high cards and want to be able to take the pot away from you at a later stage. The second and biggest reason I agree with you is the old cliche "It's better to win a small pot than lose a big one." Heads up vrs. five players who all have live cards AA is less thatn a 1/2 favorite against the feild which means that by limping in early postion you allow all those loosey goosey fools with jh 6h or 9c 6c to enter the pot and try to catch lighting in a bottle. If two palyers call a raise against your AA or KK than their is just as much money in the pot than four players limping in and your chances of winning nearly double. Chances are that unless you have AA vrs. top pair or something like that then you won't win a moster pot but you will at least be able to take down some chips without letting someone catch up to so easily.

Today while playing the 4 8 limit hold em game at Foxwoods I learned a great lesson from a very smart action player seated two seats to my rigtht. To start off with he read my hand blind in one situation but struck gold on the river and sucked out with a five outer. Oh well. I had to pay him off because he had the hand he I put him on and could never be that sure in a monser pot if he had paired his kicker or was on the nefarious river steal. ( by the way if It was an hour later I never would have paid him off knowing that he was too smart to bet the river when he could have checked and avoided a trap in a big pot like that) Anyway the lesson I learned from this very loose and aggressive action player was as follows. The game had loosened up considerably and three players in early position limped in. One seat off the dealer button my new friend the raised the pot with two black kings. To his mild suprise and consternation the big blind called and then every limper to his right also called. The flop was perfect for wired kings Qs 7s 4d. Everyone checked around to the preflop raiser with kings and he sighed then checked. The turn card brought the Qh pairing the board and a player in middle position bet. Everyone folded to the KK man and he immediatly folded before the small blind called. The river was a total blank followed by a bet a raise and a call. Sure enough the small blind had paid off a bigger set of ladies with his seven kicker and the man behind was good with his jack. After the hand when the player with KK revealed what he had and the kid next to him confirmed it there came an explanation: "As soon as i got four callers I knew my hand was in trouble, further more with that much money in the pot I knew that no one would throw away top pair or a flush draw so I checked looking for the draws to miss so that I could punish them on the turn once their odds went down to five to one." Think about this lesson- instead of committing to playing his cowboys to the river no matter what because of the size of the pot like most bad player's would do, he lost only two small bets totaling eight dollars with an overpair and he was 100% right. Instead of losing another small bet and three more big bets than sulking about it he understood the situation and lost the minimum amount possible. What a great play! By the way in the next forty five minutes the same young man picked up two boats and a straight in order to more than double his chip stack. So in recap: 1.PAtiemce pays 2. Don't overvalue an overpair in a loose multiway action pot.

Here's the tale of how I took down a pot last night with eight high in a limit game none the less. I was at a 4 8 table where the level of play was very strong: Even stronger than alot of 5 10 or 10 20 tables at Foxwoods in my opinion. Anyway a few loose limpers took over seats six and seven and turned a tight game on its heels. Multiway pots with big swings became the norm for most players but I maintained my tight image by raising big hands and refusing to turn over "silver medals". My stack was growing nicely and the table had developed a healthy fear of my game so I decided to try and take advantage of my image with a calculated bluff. One hand three people limped in including the player under the gun so I decided to take a flyer with 8h 6d (an awful hand I would not recomend limping with normally) the flop came 3s 3h 2c and the player under the gun immediatly raised the two players too his left released there hands before the action came to me. I had played this hand with the intention of looking for a flop to bluff on but this was the obvious bluffers board- who has a peice of 3 3 2? However the early postion raiser had given me the oppurtunity to represent a real over pair by reraising. I didn't feel that he had a peice of the flop because he was also a strong player and would not likely have a 3 or 2 in his hand and furthermore I referenced an earlier hand when he had limped under the gun with A 8 off suit and I made a mental note of this poor play. So I really figured him for a hand like that, probably A 5 and I carefully reraised him. Now I only had to deal with the big blind and hope that he wasn't holding a trey in his hand. Thankfully the blind passed his hand and the early raiser called. A 5 I told myself. The turn card was a seven which was a little uncomfortably since I thought he had a weak ace but I bet and he called again. On the river a 10 or something like that came off and he checked. I began to stack my bet riffled my chips and before I could bet it out my opponent said "don't bother" and threw his hand in the muck. Eight high won me a nice little pot! Do I advice playing alot of hands in this fashion: unequivicably NO, but the moral is that at a strong table the right kind of table image can net you much needed pots even when your cards are a little cold. After the hand I asked the player if he had the wheel draw and he said he did, then I pulled a Phil Helmuth and told him I had wired sixes. LOL. Since I was not limping into pots with any junk hand that I could find and decided to pick and choose my spot to make a play at the pot the table really respected me and let me steal all their limped money as well as a a big bet from my best oppenent. Keep playing tight and aggressive and I hope the readers of this site like my stories. Good luck.

Last night I went down to Foxwoods with two of my friends:one being a stone Rookie who just started playing poker and the other being my friend Bruce who has quickly become a very tight effecient player. I was tired from a late night of rounding the night before so I made them wait while I took a nap.(I know I'm a big baby but they did show up an hour and a half early and I do have a solid entertainmene center)So any way oncce I got rested up and ready I took a shower then did fifty pushups to really wake myself up: Bruce said something like "If you're real tired then don't go man, I don't want to see you donate tonight after you've been playing solid all week without any real big rushes"- But I was ready to go. I told myself no cute stuff early on because I'm not sure if I'm one hundred percent awake but once I got there I got a table right away and sat down. In the first twelve deals I made a Jh 9h flush from the dealer buttom, took down another pot with 10 10 and the picked up AA in an action pot. When four players called a capped pot I knew I had trouble! I went into my mentality of losing as little as possible on a hand where I knew no one was throwing away any draw. I was in the nine seat and I just knew that my oppenent in the one seat who had capped it after I three bet had KK so that left me two opponents to worry about. Suprisingly my AA held up on the river and I wone a monster pot for 4 8 hold em (about 180 bucks). After that I continued to pick up wired pairs consinstently but had to lay down alot of them because the table became such an acton table afte my big pot and another one that followed that I could not buy enought free cards to play past the turn most of the time. I really felt like having such a nice rush early on woke me up and got my game flowing nicely. I was calling the hands on the river before my oppenents could turn them over and my table image was strong. Plus as usual it was a good table where a smile and a little joking around wasn't treated like a malignant cancer cell. So even the really "live ones" who sat down were having a good time. Unfortunatly by the time my buddy Bruce got to my table I could notice the steam coming from his ears and I tried to calm him down a little but he over committed alot of chips one hand out of the small blind with 8 8 and then paid off down to the river when the big blind made Kings full of sevens. (this was shocking to me and reaffirmed my notion that he was really steaming because Bruce never usually plays like that). Any way I did make two mistakes last night, both of them from the dealer position. Everybody knows that the dealer button is the best position in hoid'em but it can be a tricky place to be in limit games because you want to play more hands but often times it is difficult to decide whether to raise or whether or not to smooth call. Both my mistakes last night resulted from not raising pre-flop on the button with hands I should have won. The first example I had Js 10s against two early position limpers and took a flyer on the button. The small blind called and then the big blind raised. Raising out of the big blind is usually a sign of a monster hand, however the raiser was a very loose aggressive player and I thought he would probably do that with a hand as weak as A J or A 10, which posed a problem for me because my hand was Js 10s. The two early limpers made their automatic calls (PLEASE ALWAYS THINK BEFORE YOU CALL A RAISE EVEN IF YOU KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO CALL ANYWAY. A little consideration never hurt anybody. SO here I am on the dealer button having to put only four more dollars into a fairly lucrative pot and I decide that I am such a smarty pants that I'm going to fold my hand because of the big blind raise. Sure enough the flop came down J 10 7 and there was a bet and a call. I was immediatly kicking myself under the table. I kicked myself even more on the river when the big blind turned up Ac 7c on the river for a silver medal hand. I threw away a playable hand in position because I was a 56% to 44% under dog! How should I have played the hand?- I believe I should have raised on the buttom utilizing my strong table image and my good position to take the lead in the hand and then bet out the flop the turn and the river. I probably would have gotten paid off with a nice profit whether or not the hand got past the turn or not! DAmn what a fool I can be.
The second mistake was a similar circumastance but this time I had A 9 off suit on the button and tried limping again. Sure enough the flop comes rainbow 9 4 2 and the same loose player in the blind raises right away. I raised him back and he three bets me, So we go to the turn heads up. Before the card was flipped he bets in the dark.HMMMMMMMMMMMMM. The turn card was a 2 and I stopped to think. Logically the duece helped my hand as I know had nines and twos with the best kicker. I thought would my opponent make the same play betting in the dark with a hand like k 9 or Q 9 and decided that he would so I called again. Before the river he bet again in the dark and since I had paid off the turn thinking my hand was about 1 out of 2 to be the best I paid off the river. Sure enough he turned over a boat nines full of deuces. One live duece in his hand and he spiked it twice- I was drawing dead on the turn! Six months ago I would have told myslef "YOU had to pay off their against that opponent, you had no choice." Now I know better I did have three better choices but I didn't exercise any of them. Here they are in order of worst to best.
1. I could have folded my hand before the flop on the button. A 9 is not a great hand and just because I had position doesn't mean that I have to play, particularly since I had been catching great any way.
2. I could have raised before the flop. AFter the hand my loose aggressive oppenent told my that he would have passed his 9 2 for a full raise and I half believed him. ( The guy was very loose and I wouldn't be suprised if he takes flyers out of the big blind with hands like that)But by raising early on I would be represting a real hand he probably would have folded and then I could have won a small pot / or if he called and reraised when he struck lighting It would have been easier for me to put him on something like a low set and muck top pair.
3. I could have limped in played the same nearly the same but capped the flop instead of calling the third bet. That would have made my investment in the pot only one small bet more and when my oppenent bets in the dark after I cap it than I would have know for sure that I was in trouble and passed my hand for sure (probably face up). Capping the flop would have cost me four more dollars and by doing that I would have been able to save sixteen, so my stingy play of just calling the third be actually cost me 12 dollars ( 8 + 8 - 4 = 12 ).
Basically the moral to the story is that the dealer button is just like any other important variable in poker. It should not be undervalued or overvalued to much. Limping with borderline hands is still one of the most passive aggressive tendencies on the felt whether you are in position or not. There is still a low expected value from playing this way and further you still must consider your implied odds and your own investment in the pot just the same when you proceed forward in hand past the flop. Don't fall in love with any singular postition or any two cards just continue using your instincts and knowledge to understand the unique "situation" that you are in, instead of getting trapped drawing to a five outer or less and then feeling like the cards have cursed you. Keep playing tight and aggressive and don't be afraid to throw away the siler medal.

I don't know if anyone ever reads these articles. I certainly don't do a very good job of checking for gramatical or syntatical errors when I write them. (Notice I mispelled syntatical) Tonight I realized that after about a year and a half of playing poker seriously I may finally be developing the stuff to become a real money player at real tables instead of just winning when I'm hot and losing when the cards make fun of me or screwing around on the stupid low limit cash games on the computer. (God I hate computer poker)
Hearing someone day this the obvious next question is "how much did you win", but think about this for a second: Winning alot on a night of getting great cards is not that hard to accomplish. Granted alot of players really suck and immediatly begin donating every chip they win back to the field by constantly limping in with garbage and flat calling with any draw but I don't write my columns for those guys because I assume that mostly they are too busy being obsessed with themselves to ever actually sit and read some advice. I write for some of the guys who have posted some stuff on here as well as my own benefit. I find that keeping a journal has helped my game since I started doing it and writing is another interest of mine so why not.
BAck to the major point. How much did I win? The answer is -11 dollars(THAT INCLUDES chips used for tipping the dealers and waitress's). So why am I bragging about this pithy loss as if I am a champion when I didn't even even mention that I won 340 last night in the article I wrote. The answer is simple: I am way more proud to lose 11 tonight than to win 340 last night because tonight my cards were equally bad as they were good the night before. In a five hour session I had wired kings once and QQ another time and lost both hands for as minimal an investment as I could manage without being to tight and throwing away a winner(BOth times I was right- one hand was
ME QQ
AA KK
BB JJ
CC A3
Guess who won? You got it the proverbial A 3 call a capped pot asshole got there with two pairs. Other than those two I picked up garbage for hours until the blinds and occasional postion raises had eaten my stack away. Finally I made an ace high flush in about hour three of my session. On the comeback trail. HArdly I got blinded to death for a while before flopping two pair three betting the flop and watching the middle of a four card straight turn. When the loose limper reached for chips I mucked my hand face up and he looked dejected as he flashed his made straight. No kidding buddy. LOL.
All night long I kept a good attitude. I'm of the Daniel Negranuea philosophy of having a good time at the table and playing a set number of hours rather than a session that goes on until your either broke or sipping champagne. I like to reduce my variance so that I can continue to round. So going into the last half hour of my session I am stuck for another BS pot when I raise in late postion with a very borderline Ad 9d and lose in a multiway pot to As 8h when a four flush turned. Then I nearly got steaming because the guy who had the ace checked the river trying to induce action and then as I turned up my hand in last position after everyone checked he tried to claim that he intended to raise. What an asshole. HE CHECKS THE RIVER THINKIG HE IS A SLICKSTER AND THEN WHEN NO ONE BITES HE TRIES TO PUT ANOTHER BET IN AND CLAIM THAT I AM ACTING OUT OF TURN BY EXPOSING MY HAND AS THE LAST TO ACT. People hitting three outers all night didn't bother me but this unsportsmanlike BS from a guy who was lucky not to go broke in the first hour he sat down really bothered me. Any way after the hand he left and I was down to about thirty bucks when an amazing thing happened. A girl in early postiion who I made for a tight player raised and everyone laid there hand down to me in the big blind I called with 7 7. The flop came down 10c 5c 2d I bet and she raised. Unequivicably I would recommend reraising with two sevens here which I did and she quickly called. A K I told myself- No flush draw either. After laying down Kings, two pair and a few other dismantled hands these sevens felt like a full boat to me and I had exactly two bets left. I checked she bet and I immediatly put in the last of my chips with confidence. After thinking for a while she asked the dealer if I was all in and he said yes, She knew that she was outplayed but I was at my cutoff time and had all my chips in play so she called hoping for that river miracle. Finally my hand held up and the kid to my right said "Wow man you really are a fucking player you know that, I've been watching you throw away big hands every time you get beat all night and now you knew that an underpair was good!" I picked up another nice pot the next round when I flopped a low top pair of 7's out of the blind and bet them out and then chilled for a few more hands, mucked two pairs to a turned straight once more just to remember the feeling and left with eleven bucks less than I started the day with.
I calculated in my head that sixth months ago I would have lost 250 at least with the way the cards fell for me on this night. Instead I walked out even and with the respect of a table of oppenents who I felt like I can not only out catch but also out play. My next stop will probably be 10 20 hold'em, where one big bet an hour is a pretty decent wage average. AS far as stud goes I'll stick with the 1 5 game until I have the time to study the odds in that game a little more in depth. The moral to this rambling tale is that no matter how bad you are catching in cash games, don't pay off unnecessary bets. Understand your oppenents logical holdings, watch them in the hands that you are not involved in and DO NOT CONSTANTLY LIMP IN WITH GARBAGE. Once the cards and the players betting show you that you are beaten soundly then fold. There is no law of averages that states that just because some jerk pulled an inside straight on you that you have to pull the same straight out of your ass. Chances are you won't get there and then you'll have given a sucker your money twice. So take the good with the bad and understand that minimizing losses is just as critical as maximizing profititability. A well trained monkey can play good cards but can you manage bad ones for a long run? Keep working on it and keep your spirits up, after all money is only paper and poker is only a game but is sucks to lose either. Peace.

How ya'll doing. I played the 4 8 game down at Foxoods again tonight and to my suprise after getting off to a nice start I immediatly shoved my head up my own ass for about an hour and half. I couldn't believe how badly I was playing, granted I was on an hour and a half run of cold cards followed by wired queens getting cracked and mucked on the turn, followed by an A Q flush draw missing and losing to, sigh K J top pair. But who can't handle a little run of cold cards? I pissed away about 120 dollars in yellow chips and was down to fifty when I finally got my head together. The moral here- ZTF=zero tilt factor and you should committ to it.
My most skillful hand of the night came after I settled myself down and played tight for a while, consistently folding garbage for a while. I looked down in the middle position of an unraised pot and found a couple of dueces. As you all I know I hate limping in and 2 2 is an optimistic hand at best, but I felt like I had position and a strong enough table image to make a move here and look for a certian textured flop. I got one caller behind on the button and the blind money went into the pot. The flop came 9 7 5, three overcards of course, but think about it- how much better can you expect with 2 2? What am I supposed to do throw it away heads up as soon as I don't make a two outer? So I raised, The button calculated for a minute then reraised me and without hesitaition I three bet him. He thought for a second and called. I have him, I thought to myself, He's got A J, probably a back door flush draw. The turn card was perfect for me another 7 so I bet it and the button thought for a minute then laid his hand down. LAter on I took another pot down in similar fashion with a pair of fives.
Hey listen, small pairs are the best hand sometimes even if you don't flop a set. The key is using the flop to figure out if you have the best hand or not: put in the third bet before the betting limits double. If your oppenent confidently yells cap it then you're probably beat. If he simply makes a reluctant call then bet the turn unless an ace comes off and alot of the time you will pick up the pot. (This play is only advicable if you invested with a raise before the flop, other wise you simply do not have enough information to attack with a small pair) So in recap, in a short handed pot don't let two overcards bully you on a rag board and don't commit to checking and calling with your small pair, instead take the initiative to attack and try to pick up the chips on the turn. By playing this way and studying your oppenents reactions you will be able to learn if he has a hand, a draw or just two big cards that really need to pair in a hurry. The investment you make by putting the third bet in before the flop will be worth much more than one small bet in the long run.

Even after one quits the dangerous addiction of smoking there is always the dangerous possibility of a relapse or a slip. Only when the smoker himself is determined to overcome every hurdle and work towards fighting relapse symptoms, freedom from quit smoking relapse can be acquired.

 Viagra guide

Viagra is a term that is probably no longer new to anybody. It has come
to be recognized with the who’s who of the male sexual disease called
erectile dysfunction. Everybody is aware of the fact that Viagra has
something to do with the male sex organ. These tit bit informations are
alright for the layman, but for those who are prescribed the drug, it is
very important that they have complete knowledge about it, for this
they can refer any href="http://www.besthealthmed.com/viagra_guide.html">viagra guide
available on the net.
